Daniel is a Mexican American pre-medical student at Brown University entering his third year of study. His global health journey most formally began in 2023 on a two-week service immersion in the tropical countryside of the Dominican Republic. Through Education Across Borders, Daniel and a group of rising seniors at Seattle Prep built house foundations and relationships with rural communities Franco Bido and Batey Libertad.
Daniel's most striking observation was that Dominican communities seemed to carry themselves with a more selfless, energetic, and optimistic life attitude than communities back home despite facing extreme material precarity and geopolitical barriers to health. How? By prioritizing respect and humility towards self, neighbor, and higher power over material gain.
Among many life lessons, the DR taught Daniel that health is most deeply rooted in relationship rather than comfort and that there is something to learn from anyone, anywhere. Daniel now pursues a career in global health.
